FREE MEDICAL EXERCISE CONDUCTED BY A TEAM OF DOCTORS FROM ABIA STATE UNIVERSITY TEACHING HOSPITAL – ABSUTH, ABA, AT THE CHIJIOKE OSOGHO METHODIST MEMORIAL HOSPITAL ON THE 23RD OF JULY 2016
A team comprising 5 doctors from ABSUTH, plus the hospital medical director, Dr. Chinedu Aboh, and the nursing staff.
The doctors had already been visiting the community for a while. They came for an enlightenment seminar, educating the people of Item on the need to stay in good health. The seminar began on the 15th of July, as the doctors went round community, and visited various schools where they educated the people on the need to stay healthy. The program came to an end with the free medical exercise that was conducted at the Chijioke hospital. The program was sponsored by Chief Ndukwe Osogho-Ajala, the MD Soulmate Industries Limited.
Thank you for your continued support and cooperation.
Over 130 people were registered and treated during this exercise, with the patients arriving as early as 6:00 am to get their names registered. The patients came from all over Item. The exercise kicked off properly around 10:00 am after the arrival of the doctors who came from Aba, and ended around 5:00pm. The patients were called one after the other, and were diagnosed by the doctors, who in turn prescribed the required drugs to them. The Lab technicians were also on hand to take blood samples, and run the necessary tests. After diagnosis and prescription by the Doctors, the patients name file and prescription were handed to the nurses in the pharmacy department. The nurses then issue the prescribed drugs to the appropriate patient .
After a patient’s name is called from the register, he/she sees a doctor. After the tests and diagnosis, drugs are prescribed to the patient. The patients name and prescription is handed over to the nurses, who issue out the drugs.
Most of the common ailments treated included hypertension, arthritis, malaria, cataracts, diabetes, typhoid, gastric cases, etc. The only severe case was that of a patient with a case on Diabetic Foot Ulcer (DFU). After the tests and diagnosis, drugs were given to him. He was also advised to come back to the hospital for continuous treatment and medication. There was also counselling on HIV, A.I.D.S, and conservative management of ulcer.
After the exercise the lead doctor Dr. Leonard Okonkwo spoke on the benefits of the exercise, and the need for more similar exercises. He spoke on the health awareness that has been ignited in the community, and the usefulness of the exercise, as most people in the community were made aware of illnesses they never knew they had and were also treated properly and professionally. He said that this was just the first of many, as plans are already on the way, and with the backing of the sponsor, he’ll be coming back with his team for a fuller and bigger medical package for Item community. He also mentioned that he’ll be liaising with the hospital for periodic visit with his team for surgical assistance, and general training of hospital personnel. He thanked the sponsor Chief Ndukwe Osogho Ajala for the humanitarian work being done by him in community, and how impressed he is with the medical equipment’s, personnel, and administration on the hospital. That for a hospital in a rural area, that they are almost as equipped, if not better that some hospitals in the city. He also reiterated his commitment to partnering with the hospital and assisting whenever, and in whatever way he can.
