PRELIMINARY REPORT

CHIJIOKE OSOGHO MEMORIAL METHODIST HOSPITAL, APUANU ITEM IN COLLABORATION WITH OWANI PROFESSIONALS FOUNDATION AND HONORABLE NDUKWE OJUKWU FOUNDATION, ORGANISED A FREE EYE DIAGNOSTIC, TREATMENT AND SURGICAL EXERCISE- MAY 20 TILL MAY 26, 2012.



Owani Professionals Foundation is grateful to those who made generous cash and kind donations to support the programme. It is however, still appealing for more financial contributions to enable the organisers defray an outstanding debt of Six Hundred Thousand Naira (N600, 000.00) only being owed the medical team.
The income and expenditure account will soon follow. Appreciation letters have already gone out to most of the donors who are not OPF members.

Participants

  1. A general practitioner, two optometrists, one dispensing optometrist assistant and two nurses.
  2. An Ophthalmologist and his assistants.
  3. Doctor and nursing staff of the host hospital.

Participants

Pre-exercise Registration and Screening began intensely on May 7, 2012- two weeks before the exercise. This included preliminary diagnosis and screening for underlying medical conditions such as hypertension and diabetes and was aimed at attaining good control and sorting into medical and surgical cases

Chronology of Events:

  1. Sunday: Doctors arrive; Welcome to Apuanu-Item.
  2. Monday: Opening Ceremony.
  3. Monday till Wednesday: Screening, diagnosis, medical treatment, refraction and dispensing of eye glasses and sifting and categorization of surgical cases as well as pre-operative assessment.
  4. Thursday and Friday: Operations carried out.
  5. Saturday: Excursion and sight-seeing. patient advice
  6. Saturday and Sunday: Visiting team depart.

Outcome:

Over 750 patients attended, but only 298 could receive laboratory screening and eye diagnostic services, as well as medical advice and medication due to inadequate funds. Of these, 138 received free prescribed eye glasses. 51 patients were operated upon. Some patients had more than one type of surgery. The cases include:
  1. i. Unilateral small incision cataract surgery (43)
  2. ii. Bilateral small incision cataract surgery (4)
  3. iii. Trabeculectomy for Primary open angle glaucoma (3)
  4. iv. Pterygium excision (2)
Immediate post-operative assessment was satisfactory for all patients.
Photos and video recording of the event will be made available once they are ready.

Immediate Benefits of the programme:

  1. I. Screening for and discovery of new cases of DM and hypertension, as well as enrolment of such patients for subsequent management by the hospital as required.

  4. IV. Free medical treatment and dispensation of glasses.
  5. V. Free surgical treatment and immediate post-operative care.
  6. VI. Detection and correction of cases of preventable blindness.
  7. VII. Benefits to patients, their families, the host community and the nation, as well as tourism.
